SN65HVD3082E: Non Isolated RS485 in Energy Meter

Part Number: SN65HVD3082E
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THVD1500

Hi,

I would like to use this device in my energy meter project, may i know is there any issue if I use this non isolated device in the energy meter? Or for energy meter, i must use isolated rs485 instead?

Is there any risk of different voltage domain at the interface between MCU (3.3V) and RS485 transceiver (5V)?

Will it introduce additional leakage current at the digital logic input of SN65HVD3082E?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks and best regards,

KH

  • Hi,

the device you're planning to use has been used in many e-meter applications before as you can find on ti.com. In fact due to a wide common-mode range and high ESD-protection levels, these devices are well suitable for applications such as energy meter.

We would suggest anyway to use devices that are meant to work in the 3.3 V range.

Also, new devices similar to the SN65HVD3082E have been released recently, such as the THVD1500 which has slightly better specifications than the other.

Have you done any testing so far?

    Regards,

    Adrian
