TUSB321: How do you select the sink voltage?

Hello,

I am interested in using this part but I am concerned that I will not be able to select the correct voltage since only current can be selected. From what I've gathered of the datasheet, you select the current and the device picks profile with the same current. However, there is a huge difference between 3A at 12V and 3A at 20V. Does this device automatically select the highest voltage being advertised for the specified current?

Hi Robbie,

The TUSB320 does not support power delivery. One of these devices should work:

TPS2543
TPS2544
TPS2546
TPS65982
TPS25910
TUSB422

Hi Luis,

I should have been more specific. My device is in UFP mode. I need to be able to negotiate 60W worth of power in order to power my device. The TUSB320 only shows that I can negotiate current however, 12V @3A is only 36W. I need 20V @ 3A. How does this chip select the voltages? Does it select the highest voltage being advertised by the PD controller?

Hi Robbie,

As I mentioned before the TUSB320/1 does not support power delivery, hence, this device only works at 5V, it "supports" until 20V but this feature is only for over-voltage protection. Thus, the TUSB321 won't respond at 20V request.

Ok, is the TPS6598 series the only device that supports 20V PD? I don't want to have to put a micro controller in this device. Does TI offer a device a device that is as simple as the TUSB320 while being able to select the 5 PD modes using resistors? I'm not a fan of the TPS6598 series since I only need the CC controller and only need to support UFP not DFP, additionally I don't want to have to support BGAs.

The TUSB422 is the unique device that supports PD, unfortunately is DSBGA.
