DS15BA101: Extend the STP cable length of DS90UB93{3,4}-Q1 SerDes pair with DS15{B,E}A101

Part Number: DS15BA101
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DS90UB933-Q1

Hi all,

As the title suggests, I would like to know whether it is possible to extend the STP cable length of the DS90UB93{3,4}-Q1 SerDes pair to 50+ meters by placing the DS15{B,E}A101 pair in between, as demonstrated in http://www.ti.com/lit/an/snla112e/snla112e.pdf.

The input to the DS90UB933-Q1 serializer is a 1080p30 image sensor, whose PIXCLK is adjustable.

This question arose as the application note provided above only mentioned FPD-Link II Embedded Clock signals. Further research revealed that FPD-Link III (that the DS90UB93{3,4}-Q1 pair operates on) is based on CML, which is also supported by the DS15{B,E}A101 extender pair.

We write this post to request some confirmation of our application.

Sincerely,

Adrian Yuen

  • Hi Adrian,

Inserting the DS15EA/BA101 into an FPD-III link will interrupt the control-channel communications.

Are the UB93-94 using this communication channel in your application?

    Regards,

    Lee

  • Hi Lee,

    Thanks for the quick response.

I assume that by "control-channel communication" you are referring to the I2C bus from the deserializer to the serializer ONLY.

This communication channel is not absolutely required for my application. Does this mean that the SerDes pair can be extended without issue?

Additionally, I would also like to know of any existing alternatives to extending a STP/Coax cable carrying a FPD-Link III signal to 50+ meters.

    Adrian
  • Adrian,

For longer distances like 50m I prefer to utilize coaxial connections if at all possible.  The cable bandwidth is improved and the shielding makes recovery of the signal through CTLE much more robust.

If both the Ser and Des have the I2C communication disabled then 50m extension is possible.

    Regards,

    Lee
