One of my customer faced RS-485 interface problem.
They were using DS485, Low Power RS-485/RS-422 Multipoint Transceiver. But they just replaced the device with SN65HVD485E without any control timing modification because DS485 is a device going to termination. Then they faced the interface trouble. The cause was the shutdown mode implemented into SN65HVD485E. The recovery time of driver from shutdown mode to active mode is 2600ns. It was too long for their original control timing. They thought that SN65HVD485E could be used for replacing DS485 directly because the device was recommended for DS485 replacing on page3 of SN65HVD485E datasheet.
It was not good that they didn't check SN65HVD485 function and timing properly. But the customer and we hope that TI added any comment or explanation about the shutdown mode recovery timing to the features or detailed description section of the device datasheet.
