TPS65982: USB2.0 BC1.2 charging question

I have some questions relating to TPS65982. There was an application note slva775 that shows that if we want to include usb2 D+/D- charging, then we have to add TPS2544 instead of just using TPS65982.

a) Does it mean just TPS65982 alone does not provide USB charging based on detection of usb2  D+/D- voltage level (voltage divider ratio for Apple/Samsung, also BC1.2).

b) Does it mean TPS65982 only work on USB PD enumeration based on CC1 pin.  
c) Does PD charging(5V, 3A) work based on detection of a pull-down resistor Rd on the cc pin for TPS65982?

    Thank you for your interest in our USB TYPE-C/PD Controllers. Look below for my comments/feedback in red:

    The TPS65982 is a PD controller. This device is PD 2.0 compliant and uses the CCx channels to negotiate the power needed, and not the d+/d- lines. Please refer to the PD 2.0 specs at usb.org: http://www.usb.org/developers/docs/ 

    b) Does it mean TPS65982 only work on USB PD enumeration based on CC1 pin?

    The short answer is yes. It uses either the CC1 or CC2 lines to negotiate the power needed, depending on how the cable is attached (flipped or un-flipped). 

    c) Does PD charging(5V, 3A) work based on detection of a pull-down resistor Rd on the cc pin for TPS65982?  

    Yes. The default values are 5V at either 0.5A, 0.9A, 1.5A, or 3A (depending on Rp and Rd) for Type-C. If both host and slave have PD controllers, then they can negotiate up to 20V and 5A. Please refer to the USB type-C specs on the same hyperlink above in answer a). 

     

    The app note that you're referring to is for using a charging port that's type-A/B and the cable is a Type-C to Type-A/B. This is why the TPS2544 is used as well. I hope this helps :-)
