TPS65986: output short protect in PC

Part Number: TPS65986

TPS65986 is used for C to DP+USB3.0 dongle application for PC.

we need the C port to output 900mA(USB3.0 output current capacity) current, and do we need to add fuse to protect the system for short load and over load condition.,or we just only can use TPS65986 internal protection circuit without fuse for the system.

pls give your suggestion, thanks.

  • Hi Hardy,

We recommend to add a TVS diode on the system side of the TPS65986 to control potential voltage spikes. Additionally we would recommend a Schottky diode on the VBUS side to absorb additional current and to help with ground shift when removing a cable. With both of these diodes in place, the internal protection circuit of the TPS65986 will handle over current protection and also hard short protection. Section 8.3.3.4 of the TPS65986 datasheet highlights the internal power paths behavior on a hard short to ground and an over current event.

    Thank you,
    Eric
