DS125MB203: Using with SDI video at 12 Gb/s

Part Number: DS125MB203
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DS100MB203EVK

Do you have any data / information on using the Ds125MB203 with SDI video

preferably at 12 Gb/s

  • Hi Andrew,

The DS125MB203 would work with SDI video data.  It has been tested with PRBS31 at 12 Gbps.

For 12 Gbps operation it is necessary to utilize SMBus slave mode operation.  This allows the device configuration to be adjusted with greater flexibility.

    Regards,

    Lee

  • Is the I2C needed 'just' to tweak the equalizers cause of the speed,

       or cause its SDI

do Ti have any example setups for 12 G  or to support SDI at 12G ?

  • Hi Andrew,

The recommendation is purely due to the speed and the signal detection circuit bandwidth.  The SDI scrambling does not cause any issues with the DS125MB203.

I can give you an example setup if needed, the optimal settings for signal conditioning will always depend heavily on the channel losses and transmit equalization applied to the signal.

    Lee

  • Thank you,  Appreciate the feedback.

A 'sample' I2C setup would be useful please if Ti have one to hand,

appreciate I'm going to have to teak settings dependent upon the boards,

but got to start some where,

What concerned me was the data sheet mentioning so many other serial formats, not SDI,

then seeing the data sheet only had eyes for 8 Gb/s,  rather short of the 12 I'm needing,

then seeing I might 'have' to set things up in the I2C,

  • Hi Andrew,

Here is a basic configuration to start with using the DS125MB203 in a 12G SDI application

    Set EQ = 0 (minimum), DEM = 0 (minimum), and VOD = ~ 800-1000mV

I prefer to start with lower than optimal signal conditioning settings a work up to the best solution.

    Additional SMBus Register Writes

    0x06 = 18'h  /* Enable SMBus register access

0x28 = 00'h  /*  Slow down signal detect response to effectively lower the signal detect threshold

    Regards,

    Lee

  • Hi Andrew,

For a "sample" I2C setup, please refer to the DS100MB203EVK and note the connections for the ADDR[3:0] pins and SDA/SCL lines. All you will need to do is ensure that the DS125MB203 SDA/SCL have the appropriate pullup resistors and the address is set as desired.

The original reason why SDI was not included with the DS125MB203 is because this device was originally targeted for datacenter applications, such as PCIe, 10GbE, and SAS/SATA. However, given that it is a signal conditioning device for trace extension without reclocking, the DS125MB203 may work in your application.

Since there are some different types of patterns used in the SDI environment (for example, EQ Pathological), we recommend some adjustments for SDI applications. I'll send an e-mail to you offline to continue this discussion.

    Thanks,

    Michael
