SN65HVD485E: can transform RS485 to UART?

Part Number: SN65HVD485E
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THVD1500

Hi Team,

Please help to confirm SN65HVD485E can be used on RS485 to UART application.

Thanks

  • Hi Daniel,

The SN65HVD485E is an RS-485 transceiver, which means that it can be used to translate between single-ended logic-level signals and RS-485 bus signals. A typical application is to connect the device's logic I/O (D, R, DE, and RE) to a UART port (e.g., on an MCU) so that the UART data can be sent over a network using the RS-485 physical layer. I think this is what you are looking for, but I just wanted to be clear about it since a RS-485 transceiver is only used to translate the physical signals and not used to change the content of the data or format the bit pattern in any particular way.

By the way, if you only need lower data rates (<300 kbps) you may want to take a look at the THVD1500 device. It is a newer transceiver that has some advantages over the previous-generation SN65HVD485E (better ESD immunity, wider voltage ratings on the RS-485 signals, can support higher node counts, etc.).

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

    Regards,
    Max
