SN65C1168: RS-485 compatibility

Part Number: SN65C1168
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN75ALS1177

I was looking at using this transceiver for RS-485 after finding it on Digi-Key (296-31716-1-ND), but the datasheet does not mention that it conforms to TIA/EIA-485; only to TIA/EIA-422-B. Oddly, one of TI's own documents lists SN65C1168 as a RS-485 transceiver. So can I use this transceiver for RS-485, or is there a better option for a comparable price?

Thank you,

Alex

  • Alex,

There are some minor difference between RS485 and RS422. You can look at this document (www.ti.com/.../slla070d.pdf) for the details. I copied the comparison table here for your reference.

It depends on your application, you may use SN65C1168 for RS485 network. A similar device that is specifically mentioned to support both RS485 and RS422 is SN75ALS1177. Please let me know if you have questions.

    Regards,

    Hao

  • Hi Hao,

Thank you for the information, in that case I will avoid using SN65C1168 since we will most likely be using the transceiver on a proper RS-485 network. Also, we hoping to use Digi-Key for our part sourcing and it seems that SN75ALS1177 is only available in large volumes. I will evaluate our requirements more closely and see if I can find any alternatives.

    Thank you,

    Alex
