TPS65982: How to setup Multiplexer in a Custom Alternate mode

Hi,

We would like to use the TPS65982 for both Power Delivery and a custom Alternate mode.

The TPS65982 datasheet (SLVSD02C) Figure 44 shows a number of possible paths through the Port data multiplexer. We have four single ended signals we'd like to mux to C_SBU1/2 and C_USB_TP/N once the custom Alternate mode is entered.

The "TPS65981, TPS65982, and TPS65986 Firmware User’s Guide" (SLVUAH7B) indicates in section 8 that the Port data multiplexer is "Configurable through I2C register settings or Structured VDMs"

I'd like to know which I2C commands would be used. I was unable to find anything appropriate in either "TPS65981, TPS65982, and TPS65986 Host Interface Technical Reference Manual" (SLVUAN1A) or the TPS6598x application Customization Tool.

Hi Dave,

Welcome to E2E! The internal USB2.0 is configured by our firmware automatically when entering DP or TBT alternate modes. Both DP and TBT have signals that are muxed onto the SBU pins. I hope this helps and thank you for using our parts for your design :-)

Hi Aramis,

We don't want to use DisplayPort or Thunderbolt modes but rather a custom alternate mode.

Is it possible for our application processor to send commands to the TPS65982 to setup the Multiplexer in that case?

Hi Dave,

Unfortunately one cannot send commands to the multiplexer (configured by our firmware). But we have an app note explaining how to configure a custom alternate mode: http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slva841/slva841.pdf . The customer alternate mode would still need to be configured through customization tool, and the app note explains how it can be done.
