Hi,

EMI/EMC-Compliant Industrial Temp Dual-Port Gigabit Ethernet Reference Design guide” recommends  the TPD4E05U06DQA for transient protection.

Maximum voltage on MDI pins of DP83867IS  is 6.5V but Vclamp of TPD4E05U06DQA for 5A is 14V(Stand –off voltage =5.5V).

Please explain how TPD4E05U06DQA can protect the  DP83867IS and why not recommended protection device with lower stand-of voltage?

Please specify the maximum and minimum voltages on MDI pins during the transmit and receive.

Please advise

Thanks

  • Hello,

During transient events such as ESD, device pins can take much more voltage than their maximum rating which is at DC.

Here is an app note explaining ESD protection.

Since the design guide recommends the TPD4E05U06 they are saying that the clamping voltage of the device should be adequate for the DP83867IS during the ESD event.

Here is another app note that explains some of the layout considerations too. .

    Regards,

    Cameron
