DS125DF1610: Issue with BER values as function of attenuator configuration

Part Number: DS125DF1610

Hi,

I am doing validation on communication system , where I am using 2 x DS125DF1610 (system description below).

My system is working fine and I need to do further analysis on it's stability under noisy environment thus I added an attenuator in middle of the cable and I want to measure the BER (Bit Error Rate) with different configuration of the attenuator, but I am getting 2 fix values either BER=0 or BER=2047 (seems like it's counter limit).

My questions:

1) What does it mean BER=2047 ?

2) How you recommend to use the BER functionality of the retimer ?

My system is as follow :

Retimer (Pattern Generator - PRBS)  -> Transmitter >----------- Cable/ (+Attenuator)  --------------> Receiver-> Retimer (Eye Checker )

  • ECOUNT=2047 means that the error counter has maxed out. After adjusting the attenuator I would recommend that you:

    • Perform a CDR reset and release operation, to allow the retimer Rx EQ to re-adapt
    • Clear the PRBS checker count by reseting and unresetting the PRBS counter

    Cordially,
