DS90UB928Q-Q1: Video Output Disrupted during ESD Testing

[ DS90UB928-Q1 ] Video Output Disrupted during ESD Testing

Hi,

My customer has reported that their display image is disrupted during ESD testing.

When they hit the ESD pulse as conditions below, video image is disrupted for a while and back to normal operation.
(Whole system still remains normal operation. Not occured everytime like 3 times per 10 pulse shot.)

----
ESD Pulse Condition
---
- Indirect Discharge: +/-4.6kV
- Direct Discharge: 4kV
(Charge/Discharge capacitance: 2kohm/330pF)
---

Customer has tried several things such as adding small caps (0.1uF, 0.01uF) for VDDxx pins. But does not make any improvement.
Do you have any ideas to improve this behavior?

I would suggest customer to add additional small caps onto CAPxx to robust the output noise perfromance from internal voltage regulator.
How do you think?

Thank you for your support in advance.
Regards,
Ken

  • Hello Ken,

The following are suggestions for improving ESD performance of the link:

    -Use well-balanced STP cables

-Use CM chokes on the board to mitigate any cable imbalance

-Ensure good connection between the connector shield and the chassis. Use connectors that offer a 360 degree transition from shield to board ground so the ground transition is smooth and continuous

-Ensure that all Supplies within the board are well-coupled to the system ground so the supply and ground track injected transients well

-Snap ferrites around the cable shield at the connector (where cable connects into the system)
