TUSB2046B: Power shortage on USB hub

Part Number: TUSB2046B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB4041I, TUSB8041A

Use TUSB2046B to do a USB hub, Computer desktop: the power supply on the USB hub is insufficient. The hub does not have enough power to support USB large capacity storage devices.

  • Hello Mark,

The USB 2.0 specification defines a maximum current draw of 500mA from Vbus. If the TUSB2046B is configured as a bus-powered hub, 500 mA may not be enough to power-up both a large capacity HDD and the TUSB2046 along with all the other components on your hub implementation.

If you are willing to support large capacity hard drives on your hub application, I would recommend to switch to a self-powered implementation and to make sure the the power supply sourcing the downstream ports can support the intended load.

P.S. Please note that the TUSB2046B is only capable to support low-speed and full-speed rates, so performance (transfer rates) with large capacity drives won't be optimal. I would recommend you to take a look at out USB High-Speed Hubs (TUSB4041I) or Super-Speed Hubs (TUSB8041A) which would be more suitable for this application.

    Regards,
    Jorge

Project PP at March,If replace TUSB2046B that project will Delay. Now I want to know why it's going to happen, and if we have a solution, I'll consider using TUSB4041 or TUSB804 in the next version. I hope you can give me some advice .Thanks!
