TPS2546: can two TPS2546 both be at CDP in the connection

Part Number: TPS2546

hello

Customer encounter a question that they are making a power bank for a NB brand that charges the NB

for the power bank to charge the NB the TPS2546 will be in CDP mode.

however, it's found that the NB type C setting also has a TPS2546 that's configured as CDP mode

can you help on a couple of questions

1. CDP+CDP would it cause any communication issue? is found the NB wouldn't recognize the mobile device (50% of the chance)

2. when NB is getting charged, should the NB not be CDP mode anymore? since it's not a charging port

Thanks very much for the help

  • Hi John,

    1.  The laptop is charging the power bank here and then a phone is connected to the power bank for data communication to the NB and charging from the power bank?

    2.  The notebook has a Type-C port correct? When the NB is being charged, it should depend on the Type-C connection only as the TPS2546 is meant to act as a source not a sink.  I'm assuming the TPS2546 is used with the Type-C port just in-case a Type-C to Type-A cable is connected.  Therefore it may be better to have the TPS2546 in SDP when charging the NB as the NB shouldn't be charging anything from the same port as it is being charged from anyway.

  • Hi Donovan,

    appreciate the quick feedback

    1.  The laptop is charging the power bank here and then a phone is connected to the power bank for data communication to the NB and charging from the power bank?

JC: the power bank is charging TO the NB, and also charging to the cell phone, just by pass the D+D- pin from cell phone to NB

JC: yes note book as a type C port and getting charged by the power bank. so it's expected in this connection that the NB should be in SDP mode when GETTING charged right?

    Thanks

  • so there is concerns if two TPS2546 both in CDP mode for direct communication right?
    appreciat the help
  • Hi John,

There shouldn't be any issue with the TPS2546s both in CDP as long as they are connected as shown below.

I tried this in the lab with two EVMs connected as shown and my phone which does BC1.2 charging charged correctly and was recognized by the computer.

The Vbus of the two devices are not connected right?  I'm guessing the Type-C controller in the notebook has it's own Vbus path and the notebook's TPS2546's Vbus is left open.
