TUSB1046-DCI: PD Controller selection

Part Number: TUSB1046-DCI
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB422, TPS65982

I am interested in using a TUSB1046-DCI to multiplex USB 3.0 and Display port onto a USB Type C Connector.

I'm not planning to use power from USB-C on my endpoint.

Do I still require a PD controller, or can I just use the GPIO pins to select the mode of operation (CTL1, CTL0, and FLIP)?

I noticed that the TPS 65982 is used on the reference design.

I'm hoping to keep my solution simple.

What are my options for PD controller?

  • Hello Joe,

The alternate modes require Power Delivery , this is because via PD the port is capable to communicate and discover the power and data capabilities of the connection, so you can use the TPS65982 configured to provide/receive 5V only, as well as enable the DP alternate mode into the Type-C port. A second option is to use the TUSB422, this alternative requires an additional port manager (I2C master) to check the status of the port (via the TUSB422) and configure the TUSB1046-DCI.

    Best regards,
    Diego.
