TPS65981EVM: Configuration using Application Customization Tool

Part Number: TPS65981EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65981

Dear TI,

I am working on an application that mimics the EVM User's guide Table 4.  The only difference in my application is power is sourced from the PC side and not the dock side.  I need to have display, USB 2.0 , and power present in this demo.  I am still awaiting my DP-EXPANSION-EVMs but in the meantime I thought I would work on understanding how to swap where the power is sourced.  I started using the Application Customization Tool and could not find a default profile that would work for my application but was curious if you may be able to provide the file names of the examples that may work.   I need 20V to show up at the dock side when applied as shown in the picture below.  I thought this is the configuration that would work but I have not been successful in seeing 20V on the dock.

Laptop:  TPS*_DRP_HOST_STANDARD_v3_10

Dock: TPS*_URP_HOST_STANDARD_v3_10

When I load these configurations, I only see 5V on both ends of the link.

  • Hi Jason,

You are definitely on the right track here. If the templates you are using work correctly in terms of data, I would suggest updating the Source Capabilities on the board with the barrel jack connected to make sure there is a 20V profile present. On the board that is acting as a sink, I would make sure there is a 20V Sink profile available. If both the source and the sink support 20V, you will see 20V on VBUS.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Hello Eric,

Thank you for your reply. I was not able to get the custom configuration working so I reverted back to the configuration noted in the EVM USER GUIDE on table 4. I reflashed the boards with the Application Customization Tool to the EVM default. When I connect up the entire system as noted in the user guide I see all MXCTL LEDS on both the source and sink devices. I am trying to output to an HDMI monitor instead of a display port monitor but never see video output. I do see 20V on VBUS and do recgonize a USB flash drive. The only difference between my setup and the documentation is that my PDO lights are reversed from the image shown in Table 4. I believe the TEST LEDS is the SINK board and the DUT LEDS is the source board. Can you confirm if the source or sink should have the PDO lights on?

I then wanted to debug the TPS65981 register settings using the Application Customization Tool but when I try to read out the device, I never get a tab that pops up showing what the registers are.

    I could use help. Thanks,

    Jason
  • Hi Jason,

Are you using a DisplayPort to HDMI converter? DisplayPort alternate mode only works with DisplayPort protocol and would not work when connecting to an HDMI monitor without a converter.
The debug mode will not work with the "default" configuration as the register mapping is slightly different. Can you also confirm that you are using version 3.10 of the config tool on TI.com?

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • I am using an Amazon mini display port to HDMI cable with no active conversion in between. I am using version 3.1 of the application customization tool and 2.3 of the host utilities GUI.
  • Eric, I am unable to find a display port monitor in my office. Can you help guide me on what I have to do to get this working over HDMI? I have DP to HDMI cables and a lot of HDMI monitors.

    -Jason
  • I now purchased a direct display port to display port to a display port monitor and still see no active video. I can now see the D1 LED on the source side lit up when I plug in and plug out the display port board.
  • This issue is now resolved. It was a combination of cabling and PC screen resolution settings preventing this demo from working. You can close this thread.
