TVS3300: Why Schottky Diode is used in Fig 15 in the datasheet? why not Zener diode?

Could you tell the reason why Schottky Diode is used in Fig 15 in the datasheet and why Zener diode is not used?

    The schottky diode is used because it has a very low Vf drop which helps as in normal operation the diode will be forward biased. A zener diode will have the typical .7V Vf which will have more impact on the system voltage. The Schottky is in place to provide for reverse current protection, so you don't need to worry about the reverse breakdown that a zener will provide.

    Here is an additional question.

    If Schottky Diode, D0 is removed from Fig.15 in the datasheet, what will happen?

    They would like to removed it and understand the disadvantages if they remove it.

    The only purpose of the Schottky diode is to prevent a reverse voltage build-up on the IC behind the device. If the schottky is in place and the wires are hooked up backwards, the schottky will prevent current from flowing in the reverse direction. If there is no schottky diode and the leads are hooked up backwards, the reverse voltage could cause a failure in the protected IC. If there is no fear that the two inputs could be reverse wired (or if the protected circuit can already withstand voltage in either direction), then there isn't a need for including the schottky diode.
