UCC5310: isolated gate driver for static use

Good morning,

I'm new in isolated gate driver fileds, so I'm sorry for this trivial qeustion: is it possible to use an isolated gate driver, like the UCC5310, for permanently switching on an high side n-MOS?

I'm looking for an high voltage gate driver for a battery protection circuit, where an high side n-MOS must always be in the on state (except in case of protection), so typical gate drivers based on bootstrap capacitors are not suitable because they require a continuous switching of the driver.

Just in case isolated gate driver are not suitable for such static working condition, what can I use?

Hello Matteo,

Yes, it is possible to use an isolated gate driver for 100% duty cycle operation of a high-side FET.

There is an app note that may be helpful: Using a Single-Output Gate-Driver for High-Side or Low-Side Drive

For 100% duty cycle operation I recommend using an external bias supply that is referenced to the source of the high-side FET.

This will remove the need for a level shift circuit or bootstrap.

thank you for your reply and for your confirmation.

My doubt about the possibility to use the UCC5310 with 100% duty cycle was due to the capacitive coupling for driving signal acrossi the isolation barrier (page 24 of the datasheet). But actually such a capacitive coupling is not on a DC driving signal and maybe the modulation scheme of data trasmnitted through it supports also the 100% duty cycle condition.

Concerning the external isolated bias (or better, referenced to the MOS source), it's clear.

But such a kind of external bias can be used also for a standard bootstrap gate driver (i.e. not an isolated gate driver), in order to allow a 100% duty cycle?

Hi Matteo,

Yes, the external bias can be used for a standard bootstrap gate driver in order to allow for a 100% duty cycle.
