DS90UB947-Q1: How tightly bound are the SER and DES pairs? Can I use a '947 to talk to a '926?

Part Number: DS90UB947-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DS90UB926Q-Q1, DS90UB940-Q1, DS90UB928Q-Q1, , DS90UB948-Q1

so if you look on the TI table for the DS90UB947 SER, it shows the preferred (recommended) DES is the '948. How tightly is this coupling?

could you use the DES DS90UB926?

It seems the reason TI specifies a single pair (947/948) is the assumption that the input to the SER is going to be the output to the DES. However, there are cases where you might want an LVTTL input and an R/G/B/PCLK output to save not using a conversion chip.

Please note I am assuming the protocol between mismatched pairs are always going to be incompatible. Otherwise TI would show multiple pairings. This is more a paranoia check...

I assume this is a question for TI tech support...

  • Hello,

the 947 Serializer is compatible and will work with any other FPD-Link II or III (IVI) Deserializer. This is explicit written in the 947 datasheet and also on TI.com.

  • Thank you for your reply.

One can read a datasheet multiple times and learn something new each time. I found the line in section 8.1

    The DS90UB947-Q1 serializer is intended for use with a DS90UB926Q-Q1, DS90UB928Q-Q1, DS90UB940-Q1,
    DS90UB948-Q1 deserializer.

I would respectfully point out none of the tables in the link show the '947 can talk to anything but a '948. That is what I was basing my question on.

Thank you for your answer. This helps us!

  • Hi,

The 947 compatibility can be found in the Datasheet in different sections. For example; page 1, 14, 24, 33, ...

You are right; the table on TI.com can be understood in this way. But if you look right above the table you can find the following sentence:

Mix and match serializers and deserializers with different system interfaces. FPD-Link handles bus bridging translation automatically. Full interoperability and forwards and backwards compatibility across all FPD-Link2 and FPD-Link3 products allows flexible system design.
  • Thank you for the information. I was only looking at the tables. Amazing what you can see if you only look.... bandit
