TPS65982-EVM: Negotiating PD contracts

Part Number: TPS65982-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982, TPS65981EVM

From what  I understand, the TPS65982-EVM can negotiate PD contracts to sink at 5V at 3A and 12 to 20 V at 3 A. Is there a way to chose which PD contract the TPS65982-EVM will negotiate using the dip switch?

  • Hi Logan,

The TPS65982EVM Dip Switch settings are discussed in the TPS65982EVM User's Guide which you can find here: www.ti.com/.../slvuaf8c.pdf

If you do not find a configuration that will work for your application, you can create a configuration using the TPS6598x Application Customization Tool which can be downloaded here: www.ti.com/.../tps6598x-config

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Thank you for your reply! I guess I was wondering if there was a way to vary between the three sink options listed on ID #7? Also, I only want to use this device as a sink for a already existing power supply. Do you know if I need to run an electronic load in parallel with this device, or does the TPS65982 act as a load? Lastly, if the device acts as a load, does the device need to be powered via barrel jack while sinking?

    Thanks,
    Logan
  • Hi Logan,

The TPS65982EVM will automatically select the highest voltage offered by the power supply (PD Adapter). If you want to have the TPS65982EVM select which voltage it sinks, you can do so by using the Configuration tool. You can have the 82EVM select whether it selects the highest current, voltage, or power from the PD adapters offered voltages/currents. The 82EVM will not draw much current, if you want to, you can connect an E-Load to the 82EVM on the VBUS test point to draw more current.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Thank you so much for your help, I just want to understand the final configuration of the device. If I want to sink 20V at 3A, the 82EVM will be able to sink that voltage and current without any added electronic load? To use the configuration tool to upload the firmware to the 82EVM, do I need a separate module, or can I upload the firmware through the USB-C port? Lastly, do I need to connect a barrel jack power supply to the board to sink the power coming from the USB-C power supply?

    Thanks,
    Logan

  • Hi Logan,

You will need to use an Aardvark or an FTDI module to upload new Firmware onto the TPS65982EVM. Our TPS65981EVM includes an FTDI board with the EVM that can be used for programming. I would suggest ordering one for your development work.
The TPS65982EVM can sink up to 20V/3A with the default configuration. However, the Sink PDO indicates the maximum current that can be consumed with that power contract. This is explained in more detail in the USB-PD spec which can be downloaded from usb.org
Basically, when you get a 20V/3A sink contract, you can consume up to 3A at 20V as the sink device. The EVM will not do this by itself without an e-load or something to consume that power.
When you are configured as a sink, you do not need to connect the barrel jack to the sink EVM.

    Thank you,
    Eric
