SN65HVD37: SN65HVD37 reference design

Part Number: SN65HVD37
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THVD1552

Hi Team,

Can i get a reference design for the RS485 tranceiver Part No: SN65HVD37 that i have selected.

What protection to be given at the output side of  RS485  for this part ? can I get the reference schematic with these protection circuit?

Kindly help me out with this asd soon as possible.

Regards,

Karthik

  • Hi Karthik,

thank you for using E2E. The device in particular is a full duplex RS485 and the typical usage that we implement is as follows:

In this picture you can see a Multi-Point system where one Master talks with multiple slaves. This example also helps to understand how to terminate the lines as you can see here it's done with resistors R(T).

If you want to see a typical way of how to protect the lines instead, refer to the following picture:

In this specific case the TVS diodes and resistors R1 and R2 help to redirect the electrical energy of a surge transient.

If you want to have a better overview on these topics, I would suggest you to read datasheets from other devices that we have like the THVD1552 or in general THVD15xx family, since they have a better section with more examples in the application part.

On top of that I would also suggest you to have a read on the following reference guide:

The following document instead is a reference design for Full duplex RS485 but with devices slightly different than what you want to use, still worth a read:

In order for me to find a specific design about your device, you should tell me more about your application. What kind of usage are you going to have and in which type of system? I need some basic information so that I could suggest better material to read through. If you know your specific final application, please share it.

For your knowledge, in the following page you can scroll through the different Designs on TI.com, made for RS485:

Please let me know if this helps or if you have any other question.

    Thank you and best regards,

  • Hi Adrain,

    Thanks for your reply.

My application is to use RS485 for communication between my HMI(Human Machine Interface) and PLC .So i need a protection for RS485 so that my HMI is not affected by any kind of noise or interruption from the PLC while communication .Basically my UART voltage is 3.3V.

So I was asking for the reference design so that it will be helpful for me.

Should I give Fail Safe to SN65HVD37 ? And can you suggest a TVS diode part suitable for this RS485?

    Regards,

    Karthik

  • Hi Karthik,

thank you for updating me, it gives  me a better understanding of your application.

In the specific picture that I posted, the TVS diodes are CDSOT23-SM712 by Bourns; you can find the full BOM on table 7 of the datasheet of THVD1552. It is not mandatory to use these TVS diodes though, it's just a recommendation.

The SN65HVD37 device already implements receiver fail-safe, adding an external fail-safe circuitry would surely reduce the total number of nodes that you can connect to the bus.

Unfortunately I don't know of a specific reference design regarding your application, if I find one I'll certainly send it to you.

For more information about fail-safe in RS485 you can read pag 10, 11, 12 of the following document:

Please let me know if this clarifies your thoughts or if you have any other question.

    Thank you and best regards,

    Adrian
