TCAN1043-Q1: Supply current during Bus Transmission

Part Number: TCAN1043-Q1

Hi

Can you provide the data on maximum and typical supply current (Icc) during CAN Bus transmission in TCAN1043DQ1. In datasheet, it is provided that 80mA maximum of supply current is needed during Dominant state. Is that really needed 80mA in transceiver VCC rail. In my design, we are using two transceivers (Each controller has one transceiver) for communication between two micro controllers. So, around 160mA current is really needed for communication.

My questions are

1. Is that 80mA typical current is needed in VCC rail for single transceiver?

2. If using two transceivers, 160mA is needed during communication?

Thanks and regards,

  • R. Sivasuryan,

Thank you for bringing your question to E2E. The 80mA value in the datasheet is the maximum possible ICC you would see in the dominant state with 50Ω equivalent bus termination resistance. The typical value can vary, but looking at characterization data for this device, it looks to be around 38mA, and keep in mind this current is consumed only when the dominant state is being driven by that transceiver.

If using two transceivers on the same bus, the only time there is a possibility of two transceivers driving the dominant state is during arbitration when the nodes are determining whose turn it is to communicate along the bus. Otherwise, there is only one CAN device communicating at one time on the bus. So yes, there will be a short duration where two devices could be driving the dominant state, and in this case it would be 70-76mA.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Regards,
