DS125DF111EVM: DS125DF111EVM and USB2ANY

Part Number: DS125DF111EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: USB2ANY, DS125DF111, CODELOADER

Dear Expert/Experts,

I have bought a DS125DF111EVM board, and USB2ANY,

I installed the USB2ANY Explorer 2.8.2.0, later it asked me to install by itself to push the switch on the USB2ANY.

After I installed the USB2ANY, I installed the SigCon snlc055e, and DS125DF111_Updater from snlc057c. Everything was nice until I open the SigCon software, software was asking me that the firmware 2.8.2.0 is not suitable, the firmware 2.7.0.10, and when i modified the firmware, SigCon doesnt work in both cases.

Later I found some information, if i download the CodeLoader, when i download that and tried to open it gives an error such as: error -6,

Could you please let me know what is going on with this USB2ANY, I have tried whatever i found in internet, but it have not helped me yet.

Sincerely Yours,

  • Hi,

We have seen some errors previously when the PC is also controlling something else with VNC.  Disconnecting VNC and restarting the Sigcon Architect fixed the problem.

    Regards,

    Lee

  • Hi Lee,

I do not use any controlling such as VNC, i restarted PC but still not able to connect to Sigcon Architect

    Regards,
  • Does the problem maybe come from the setting of the DS125DF111EVM? because SigCon insisted on "Invalid Address or Device Not Active!". I set all jumber as it is in the user manual Fig 4. and implemented 3.3 V only 24.8 mA is used.
  • Hi EbuBad,

When you set test with SigCon Architect, on the Configuration Page, are you able to see the LED of the USB2ANY toggle when you click "Toggle LED?" If you are unable to connect to the USB2ANY and toggle the LED, this suggests to me that there may be some type of firmware corruption.
If you are able to see the LED toggle, but cannot connect to our device when you click "Apply," then there is an SMBus communication issue between the USB2ANY and the EVM.

I would like to determine whether the issue is due to issues connecting between PC -> USB2ANY or USB2ANY -> EVM.

    1. Please let us know if you can get the LED to toggle. When testing, make sure that no other software using the USB2ANY is running except SigCon Architect (for example, make sure CodeLoader is closed).

    2. If there is an error message that appears in SigCon Architect, please take a screenshot and let us know what it says so we can debug further.

    Thanks,

    Michael
  • Hi Michael,

When i open the SigCon directly i face the problem as attached screenshot.

Later as you asked, while the LED of the USB2ANY module is ON, after i push the Toggle Led, The LED begins to be OFF, I clicked the second time on Toggle LED and The LED is ON and in a short time (less then a second) OFF, and stay as OFF.

    Regards,

  • And Also,
When I open the USB2ANY Explorer. When the the firmware 2.7.0.10 is installed to devices due to the SigCon expects this firmware
It asked me to upload the firmware 2.8.2.0, when i do not it gives as:

  • Hi There,

Is there some expert to help me about this problem, I would like to make this EVM working since Friday there is no reply,

    Regards,

  • Hi EbuBad,

I will respond by the end of today. Please note that we are not in the office on weekends, so my apologies that we were not able to respond quicker.

    Regards,

    Michael

  • Hi EbuBad,

Based on your description of the issue, it appears that the problem is not communication with the USB2ANY. This is verified by your ability to toggle the LED.

I think there is an issue communicating through SMBus to the DS125DF111EVM. Please check a few things regarding the DS125DF11EVM configuration as listed in Section 5.2 of the User's Guide:

    1. Ensure EN_SMB is pulled high (tie J3 high).
    2. Ensure that the DPS_DONGLE_EVM SDA, SCL, and GND wires are connected to the correct pin headers on the DS125DF111EVM. See Figure 4 in the DS125DF111EVM User's Guide for reference.
    3. Ensure that the ADDR[1:0] pins are left floating for SMBus 8-bit address of 0x30.

Please let us know if you still face issues after verifying the above.

    Thanks,

    Michael
  • Hi Michael,

Sorry to seem so, but i am a bit rush, if the product is not working properly i just want to send it back, and ask for a new product.

This firmware expectation from those two platforms seems a problem to me, i am attaching the photos for the setting of DF125DS111EVM

  • Hi EbuBad,

The firmware expected by SigCon Architect is v.2.7.10.0. It is possible that other software such as CodeLoader may request for another version of USB2ANY. However, again, since the LED toggles, I do not believe that software version is the issue. I still think we are pinpointing the SMBus communication with the DS125DF111EVM address as the issue.

    1. Are you sure that the jumper wires you have connected to the ribbon cable are in the correct location? It looks like you have them corrected connected to PIn 1 (SCL), Pin 2 (SDA), and Pin 6 (GND), but I am unable to see the USB2ANY box, so thought I would ask.

    2. Are you operating in 2.5V mode or 3.3V mode? I do not see any power connected to VIN or VDD, so thought I would ask about that, too.

    Thanks,

    Michael
  • Hi Michael,

I have checked several times, and I asked my colleague to check it also, there seems no mis-connection.
I am giving 3.3V to J15 (VIN) while GND to J17.

Is it possible to have a talk in any platform, maybe a gotomeeting, or telephone number.
  • and I am using the USB2ANY Explorer and in its written that as below:

  • Hi EbuBad,

I'm hoping we can resolve this over the forum by completing some checks first., since we have been able to use SigCon Architect with our DS125DF11EVMs without issue on our end.

From your screenshot, I see that there is no Adapter connection in the top of the screen. You must first "Open Device."

You may attempt to read/write from the DS125DF111 directly from USB2ANY Explorer. To do so, create an I2C tab, not an SMBus tab. Then try communicating to the DS125DF111EVM and ensure that the 8-bit Address listed in the datasheet is right-shifted by 1-bit to allow you to enter the proper 7-bit address in the I2C tab.

One concern I have is whether the ribbon cable has inverted the pin mapping or not. Is it possible that your SCL/SDA/GND pins are actually connected to Pins 9, 10, and 5 instead of Pins 1, 2, and 6?

    Thanks,

    Michael
  • I changed to the I2C now, but i have to fill several place to write and read,

and also, to open the device, I have to upload the firmware 2.8.2.0 otherwise you cannot open it.

  • When I tried to connect to the SigCon, I saw this error

  • Hi EbuBad,

Uploading v2.8.2.0 should be fine, since the USB2ANY Explorer software you are using is pre-configured for v2.8.2.0. This should not affect your ability to read/write. If you are prompted to change software revision of USB2ANY, I recommend closing USB2ANY Explorer completely and re-opening before trying to read/write back.

Please see instructions to test read/write of the DS125DF111EVM:

    1. Slave address should be set to the 7-bit form and right-shifted by 1 bit. so 0x30 translates to 0x18. Please change Slave Address to 0x18.

When starting up the device, you will be in the Share Register Page by default. Therefore, if you read back from Reg 0x01, you can read back the Device Revision and ID, which should be 0x61. It does not matter what the i2C bit rate is.

    2. Type "01" into the "Write Data" box. Then click "Write." This will set the register starting location. Check to see whether this Write is acknowledged in the Activity Log.

    3. If the write is acknowledged, set the number of bytes in the "Read data" section to "1" bytes, then click Read.

I thought of a few other things that may help with debugging:

    - Do you have any other devices that you know have responded without issue for SMBus communication? Would it be possible to test USB2ANY communication over SMBus with these devices to ensure that you are able to achieve successful communication through USB2ANY? This will help us confirm that it is not a hardware setup issue.

    - Have you tested the DS125DF111EVM signal path yet? I'm interested to see if there may be any damage to the IC that is causing it not to respond to your SMBus read/write. What is the current reading when you connect your power supply to the EVM and power it up? Have you tried connecting either a 1.25 Gbps or 10.3125 Gbps signal to it yet and verify the LOCK LED turns on?

    Thanks,

    Michael
  • Hi EbuBad,

Let's first try establishing communication through USB2ANY Explorer since you have it available. Once this is done, then we can focus on SigCon Architect.

Please also let me know about whether you have tested the two debugging questions in my previous post.

    Thanks,

    Michael
  • Hi Micheal,

When i tried to work with I2C, i see this in the screen

and at the end it wrote that "write timeout", and also current is 30mA... I dont have any other EVM to test it.

  • Hi EbuBad,

I am unable to see the row after you write to 0x0018. It appears to be some kind of error message. Can you let me know what it says?

Also, please populate a "1" under the "Read" button.

    Thanks,

    Michael
  • Hi Micheal,

After several software and hardware checking, it is now work. I dont know how but it seems PC problems.
I am not working with other PC.
but now I would like to ask how I will generate the PRBS signal at the output of the EVM?

Thank you very much for your efforts and helps.
  • Is there any useful information about how to generate PRBS generator with SigCon?
  • Hi EbuBad,

Glad to hear that you are now able to talk to the EVM! If I understand right, it seems that swapping PCs did the trick.

Regarding PRBS signal generation, this can be setup in the SigCon Architect GUI.

    1. In order for the PRBS Generator to work, you will need to connect a source signal to the DS125DF111 input that is the same data rate as the one you are attempting to generate on the PRBS output. We often lock the PRBS generating retimer to a clock running at a subrate of VCO/2. Note that the free running VCO is not accurate enough to reliably lock to the 1000ppm window.

    2. In the DS125DF111 Profile, navigate to the "Tx Control / PRBS Generator" and enable the PRBS Generator pull-down for the "Output Signal Select". Leave "Free VCO Running?" unchecked.

    3. Enable the PRBS output by clicking "Enable," followed by "Apply to Channel."

    Thanks,

    Michael
  • Yes thank you very much it was a big headache, softwares :), I did what you mentioned there. I want to generate the fixed data-rate PRBS signal. but now i dont know which data-rate it is generating the PRBS.
  • Hi EbuBad,

The data rate of the PRBS is equal to the data rate that the CDR has locked to at the input.

The DS125DF111 default datarates are 9.8304, 4.9152, 2.4576, 1.2288 and 12.288, 6.144, 3.072, and 1.5625 Gbps. By providing a clock signal equal to half of any of these data rates, you will be able to achieve lock at that rate. For example, if you provide a 9.8304 / 2 = 4.9152 GHz clock on the DS125DF111 channel input, the DS125DF111 will achieve lock to a 9.8304 Gbps signal.

Once the DS125DF111 is locked at the desired data rate, enabling the PRBS generator will cause the DS125DF111 to output a PRBS signal of your choosing rather than the retimed signal at the output. This PRBS generator output is the same rate as the rate detected by the CDR.

    Thanks,

    Michael
  • Hi Micheal

Is not it possible to use df125ds111evm as  PRBS, without any clock signal inject into the EVM?  As i understand from datasheet it can be used as a PRBS generator. For those baud rates i have to inject a clock signal to EVM?

  • Hi EbuBad,

It is technically possible to use the free-running VCO to generate the PRBS. However, the free running VCO is not accurate enough to reliably output a signal at the exact desired rate +/- 1000ppm. This is why we typically run the PRBS when the retimer's input is locked to a clock running at a subrate of VCO/2.

    Thanks,

    Michael
  • Hi Michael,

As i understand the EVM cannot be used as PRBS generator the data rates u mentione. Only for free running osci.

Thank you very much for your helps.
  • Hi EbuBad,

To clarify, the EVM can be used as a PRBS generator at a specific data rate so long as you have a clock signal that you are inputting at VCO/2. Otherwise, you will need to rely on the free-running VCO.

    Thanks,

    Michael
