Hello,

I have a customer who wants to convert a UART signal over the distance of about 30 ft.

I was going to suggest that he creates 3 modules, then have the USB standard which can go the distance be on cables rather than the UART signals.

- 2 modules that convert UART to USB 2.0

- 1 module which will act as a Hub that will communicate with a tablet

I did a quick search and these are the devices I was considering:

- TUSB3410 (UART to USB 2.0)

- TUSB4020BI (a hub to take 2 USB 2.0 signals in and output to 1 USB to tablet)

Are there any other devices you would recommend to do either of these applications?

You also can add a RS 232 drive, we have tested the SN75LV4737A with our TUSB3410.

I wanted to confirm that this device is not just a intelligent switch, but rather will allow a sort of mesh network

Will I need a MCU to manage the data?

Hello Louie,

Please note as the TUSB3410 is a full speed device, is not recommended to use a longer cable than 5 meters ( 16.4 feet ), if you want to exceed this limitation you will need to add a USB re-driver like the TUSB522P.

I suppose that you will be connecting the USB Hub to a USB host controller, this controller will handle the data transactions.

What OS will have the system where you are going to connect the USB hub?

Is there a USB Host controller you would recommend?

They will be running the final output from the USB A to Micro USB into an Android tablet.

TI only own the TUSB7340 that is a USB3.0 host controller but unfortunately, it is NRND now.

Please note we don't have a USB to UART specific driver for Android, but please note that the Linux driver is included by default since kernel 2.6.

This application is starting to sound more unfeasible.

Is there no way to solve the issue of UART communication between two devices and an android tablet over long distances?

It looks like this will be an incomplete solution if I am just using TI parts.

HI Louie,

The USB 2.0 standard specifies a maximum of 5M cable lengths between the host and a hub or device. In this case, USB 2.0 is not a good fit for a UART over long distance application.

Hello,

My apologies on not being clear.
In this system, I would convert the UART to USB at the point with an add on, and instead the USB cable would be traveling the distance of 5M.
If I specify to my customer that the USB cable can travel no longer than the 5M distance, would this application work?
The UART speeds will be very slow, about 100B per every 100Hz over 3.3V CMOS logic.

Hi Louie,

If cable lengths are limited to 5M, the USB electrical / protocol portion of the proposed design will work. The USB to UART driver limitation that Roberto brought up would still be a concern.

Louie,

The best TI solution for USB to UART is the TUSB3410, but as noted earlier we do not have an android driver that we can provide.
