TPS65982-EVM: What is difference between boards TPS65982EVM, TPS65983EVM and TPS65986EVM?

Part Number: TPS65982-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65986EVM, TPS65981EVM, TPS65981, TPS65982

I need to make a system for a vehicle, electric skateboard, but those are my first steps with USB Type C

I need charger the battery pack of the skate, and the skate need charge a cell phone, all over using USB C.

I believe I should buy two TPS6598X boards reviews to perform the sink source between and after with my board.

1) Which of them are scaled to 5A?

2) I don´t know the differences between boards, TPS65982EVM, TPS65983EVM and TPS65986EVM?

  • Hi Andre,

Apart from TPS65982EVM, TPS65983EVM and TPS65986EVM, TI also has TPS65981EVM.

    1. TPS65981/2/3EVM have both an internal and external power path. The TPS65986EVM only has an internal power path.

    2. TPS65981EVM can source 5V/9V/15V/20V, while TPS65982/6EVM sources 5V/12V/20V.

TPS65981EVM integrates the FTDI board (needed to configure the PD controller) while TPS65982/3/6EVM doesn’t.

TPS65983EVM is used for thunderbolt ecosystems ONLY. If you don’t need thunderbolt, the TPS65983 is NOT recommended.

For your application, we would suggest buying TPS65981EVM. The external power path should be used to source 5A. But keep in mind that the cable needs to be rated for 5A as well. If the type-c cable is rated for 3A, the PD contract will limit the current to 3A, even if the PDO’s are set for 20V/5A.

I hope this helps and If this answers your question, PLEASE select  This resolved my issue

    Best Regards,

    Hao
