TPS65983: Could TPS65983 VBUS get 20V/15V/9V/5V from PP_HV

Part Number: TPS65983

Hi All,
We are using TPS65983 with Intel Alpine Ridge. The power supply of the board is 12V from PCIE Golden Finger. I have some confuse about power.
 Question:
 1. could VBUS get 20V@5A, 15V@3A, 9V@3A and 5V@3A just from PP_HV(PP_5V, PP_EXT not used). Is there any power solution that support both boost and DC-DC block?
 2. If Question 1 is OK. How to switch Power between 20V/15V/9V/5V? By GPIO?

  • Hi Zuyan,

Are you going to building a thunderbolt ecosystem? If yes, you must copy exactly the intel reference design. This would take care of power solution question 1.

    1. If PP_HV is used, the maximum current is 3A. If you want 5A, you need to use the PP_EXT. You mentioned the power supply is 12V,The intel reference already has an reference, you must copy that.

    2. Yeah, you can get  20V/15V/9V/5V by GPIO, you can refer to any of our PD controllers user's guide to see how this is done. But again, if you're building a Thunderbolt ecosystem, this is already configured in our GUI.

If you are't building a thunderbolt ecosystem, we would recommend TPS65981.

I hope this helps and If this answers your question, PLEASE select  This resolved my issue

  • Hi Hao,

Thank you very much for your quick reply!

    1. Yes, we are going to build a thunderbolt ecosystem.

    2. You said I should follow Intel reference. Could you please provide reference design link address? I have a reference design in my hand, but the power solution: output of 12V_to_5V step_down DC-DC connect to PP_5V0. PP_HV and PP_EXT not used. this power solution is not my need.

    Thank you very much!

  • Hi Hao,
What's the voltage choose mechanism for TPS65983? is there any TI power solution for get 5V/9V/15V/20V@ 3A for PP_HV to VBUS? If yes, please help to provide PN of it. Thank you very much!
  • Hi Hao,

Our question is if we want to support 60W power, that is to support 5V@3A, 9V@3A, 15V@3A and 20V@3A. How to use the variable source function in TPS6593? How to realize the 9V, 15V and 20V controll on PP_HV channel to VBUS? As my understanding, there will be GPIOs configured to controll or tune regulatiors'output. So how and where can we configure the GPIO map in TPS65983?

    Thanks so much.

  • Hi Homer, Zuyan,

Here are my comments/feedback for your thunderbolt ecosystem design:

    1. If you are building a thunderbolt ecosystem, you should exactly copy the Intel reference, any change is highly not recommended including changing the DC/DC.

    2. I’m not sure if the attached reference design is the correct reference design. Please check to see if you have document# 570406 for an Alpine Ridge system. This should have the power architecture with 5V/9V/15V/20V at 3A.

    3. Please contact your Intel sales representative for the Intel TBT reference design. The reference design will have multiple pages (50-100 pages) that showcase all devices and routing for your TBT design.

If you want to build a non-thunderbolt ecosystem and customize the design, you can refer to TPS65981 and change anything you want.
