TPS2546: TPS2546 can over spec drive 5V/3A current.?

Part Number: TPS2546
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2547, TPS25810, TPS2514, TPS2511, HD3SS3220

Hi Team,

Due to customer required BC1.2 function and 5V/3A , but 2546 Iout max is 2.5A.

Do we know TI 2546 can over spec drive 5V/3A current.?

  • Hello,
I have two questions for you.
    1. May I ask what device uses 5V at 3A? This is not BC1.2 compliant as it can only allow up to 7.5W (5V/1.5A).
    2. What type of adaptor is being used? Is it a legacy device or a USB Type-C? USB type-C has a maximum power output of 15W(5V/3A) which is what you are looking for.
  • Adam,
Checked with customer for you question.
    Can customer use TPS2547?

  • It is for type C data port(5V/3A) and need to support BC1.2. What is the recommendation?
  • Hello,

I would recommend using the TPS25810. This is a USB Type-C DFP controller with source capabilities of 5V at 3A. To accommodate for BC1.2 detection, you will need to use a separate part alongside the TPS25810.

If you do not need to worry about transferring data when connected to the legacy device via BC1.2, I would recommend using the TPS2511 or TPS2514 as the device connected alongside the TPS25810. Here is a link to a reference design that would fit your needs.

If you do want to transfer data from the legacy device, then I would suggest using the TPS2547 as the device connected alongside the TPS25810. You will connect the TPS2547 similarly to the TPS2514 in the design above

  • Thanks for recommendation.
    Can customer uses HD3SS3220+TUSB2547?

  • Do you mean the TPS2547? If so then yes, I do not see why the two devices cannot be used together. However, the HD3SS3220 is assigned to a different group than the one that I am in. What I would recommend is closing this thread, and verifying with their team that the two parts can be used with one another. They could tell you what I told you, but they could also recommend a different part that I do not know about the may be more compatible with the HD3SS3220.
