TLK10034: 10G PHY Selection

Hello, I'm trying to find a PHY for the 10G Ports on the 66AK2H14 ARM+DSP. The processor has XFI outputs and support 10GBASE-KR. The datasheet for the TLK10034 on page 156 states, "The device can also be used for optical physical layers (like 10GBASE-SR or 10GBASE-LR) by interfacing to optical modules requiring SFI or XFI electrical signaling." That's the only mention of XFI in the document. My question is will this device be able to interface with the ARM+DSP, or should I keep looking for another PHY?

Hello Joe,

TLK10034 can work with XFI, even though datasheet doesn't elaborate on it. There are customers using it to interface to optical modules.

Hi, the output of the 66AK2H14 XFI(10G) has 1-TX pair and 1-RX pair (Port 0) and 1-TX pair and 1-RX pair (Port 1).

The TLK10034 has 4 -TX Pairs and 4-RX Pair for Port A and the same for Port B. The Datasheet doesn't explain how to configure for XAUI or XFI inputs.

I'm having a battle trying to find a PHY that will work with this ARM+DSP. Hopefully things will work out.

Hi Joe,

I believe you need to connect the 10G XFI output of the 66AK2H14 to the high speed side:
66AK2H14 (XFI) <==>(XFI)[High Speed Side] TLK10232 [Low Speed Side](XAUI)

Hello, so it would be something like this:

66AK2H14 (XFI) <==>(XFI)[High Speed Side] TLK10232 [Low Speed Side](XAUI) <==>TLK10034(XAUI).

Sound do-able. I would have to program the TLK10232 and the TLK10034.

Quick question, the MDIO interface on the TLK10232 that would be connected to the MDIO interface on the 66AK2H14, correct?

Joe,

You can use TLK10232 if you only need 2 channels (or TLK10031 if using only 1 channel).

The MDIO interface on the TLK10232 can be connected to MDIO of 66AK2H14 so that the processor can send the appropriate commands to configure the TLK10232 properly.

Hello, my co-worker found this document:

And was wondering if that would be a solution? It seems to me a direct connect to an XFP should be able to network to another XFP maybe residing in a 10G switch. I have to admit that I is new to this world of networking so this may sound silly.

Hi Joe,

It depends on what you ultimately want to do. If all you want to connect 66AK2H14 to an optical module, then what that white paper suggests seem to be what you want. To confirm and get more info/details, you may need to post the question as such (basically your last post) to the 66AK2H14 forum to get support from the right people.

We've decided to go with the direct connection to the XFP. Quick question for you. Will this allow us to connect to a 10G XFP switch?

I am not sure. You really need to post this question to the 66AK2H14 processor team to make sure it can work with this configuration. Please start a new post for 66AK2H14 team.
