TPS65982: No connection to TPS65982-EVM via USB EP

Part Number: TPS65982
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , TPS65981

Hello TI Team,

I'm having a little trouble connecting a TPS65982-EVM to my PC.

Instead of using an Aardvark or FTDI connection I wanted to use the USB EP option. However, neither the "Utilities GUI" (using: Configure -> Test Configuration Setting) nor the "Application Customization Tool" seem to be able to connect to the board. Both application return the error: "ValueError: No backend available" (when trying to execute the hw_open function in the corresponding python script). Furthermore there isn't even anything visible in the Device Manager on Windows (or on /dev/ on ubuntu respectively) when connecting the EVM via the USB-C to USB-A cable to a PC, so I can't even try to talk to the board 'by hand'.

I power the EVM via Pin2 of the J5 jack (the System_5V rail) of the board (which also seems to power the System_3V3 rail). Besides the power LED, the cc1 LED (or cc2 LED) is also lighting up when the USB-C cable is connected.

Connection the EVM to a PC this way should work, shouldn't it? Or am I missing something?

regards

Tobias Eckhardt

  • Hi Tobias,

We strongly recommend using FTDI board to flash or debug. If you haven't started your design with TPS65982, we would also recommend using TPS65981 which has an FTDI board, you could apply for TPS65981EVM on TI website.

Also, the latest GUI TPS6598x Configuration Tool is recommended to flash the FW.

I hope it helps and solves your problem, PLEASE select  This resolved my issue

  • Hello Hao,

sadly this did not resolve my issue.
Since I already bought a TPS65982-EVM I'd like to use it, instead of buying yet another board. I also downloaded the latest GUI Config Tool, but the issue remains.
I will now try to interface with the EVM via a custom FTDI chip but I fear I need some more information than I found in the EVM's User Guide.
I'm sorry for my very limited understanding, but maybe someone can tell my how i need to connect a random FTDI board to the TPS65982-EVM? (Which Pin's to connect.) Or do you just mean that one could emulate a SPI or I2C interface using a FTDI chip?
I still hope someone has experience connecting the EVM with just the USB-EP variant.

    regards
    Tobias
  • Hi Tobias,

FTDI board for TPS65982EVM has variable functions such as I2C and SPI, it's not a simple board. I would suggest using an FTDI board for your design. If you have an aardvark at hand, you can also use it to flash FW and debug. For the details, please refer to www.ti.com/.../slvuar8a.pdf
