TPS65981: TPS65981

Part Number: TPS65981
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2546

We are working on a TPS65981 design. Is there a way to configure the TPS65981 firmware making Apple products draw more power that default USB3.0 legacy  (5V/0.9A) ? We have apple products connected to the TPS65981 controller via USB-Type C to Apple lightning cable from Apple. Have tried different settings with BC1.2, etc but this did not change the behavior. Other devices supporting USB PD works fine with higher current and voltage profiles connected to TPS65981. Apple does sell their own USB Type-C PD chargers with lightning cable for high power charging.

  • Hello Jonas,

Unfortunately the TPS65981 can only support BC1.2 compliant charging modes. Apple has their own proprietary charging modes that go against the BC1.2 specification. Certain BC1.2 compliant products we have, such as the TPS2546, take this into consideration and is able to support Apple charging modes. However, the TPS65981 is not one of those parts.

There is really only one solution to this problem if you want to support apple charging and that is to have an external BC1.2 such as the TPS2546. If you want to go down this avenue, let me know and I can suggest some designs for you to follow.
