SN6505B: SN6505B application

Part Number: SN6505B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN6501,

All,

I'm looking to use the SN6505B for generating a dual ±20V supply from a single +5V supply. This would be for a low load current application (probably < 5mA). There's an application shown in the SN6501 datasheet on page 21, figure 48, showing a half-wave rectifier without center tapped secondary that should work.

Is there a reason that this application is shown on the SN6501 datasheet and not on the SN6505B datasheet? It seems like the application would work for both devices.

  • Hi Joseph,

The approaches in Figure 48 & Figure 49 of SN6501 datasheet are actually the same, Figure 48 just introduces the mid point as local reference. Hence it is not included in SN6505 datasheet.
The approach given in Figure 46 has better regulation and not as dependent on duty cycle compared the approach in Figure 48, hence I recommend to use the one in Figure 46 with a transformer of suitable turns-ratio for ±20V. In addition SN6505 has additional benefits like soft start, SSM, external clock input and two frequency options, you may want to recommend SN6505 to customer.

Let me know if you have any other questions, thanks.
