TPS65987D: Default Configuration of TPS65987DH/83B without flash

Part Number: TPS65987D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65983B,

Hi, Team,

If we do not put any firmware in the external ROM, will it work as a simple USB source (without PD negotiation) by default? I thinks that TPS65983B doesn't work.

We would like to know whether VBUS turns on by default or not. What is current if yes?

The GPIO of PD controller also controls the multiplexer, since GPIO is disabled = Hi - Z by default, CTL 1 PIN CTL 0 PIN FLIP PIN becomes H, H, H by external pull - up, and one port USB 3.1 + 2 Lane DP - With Flip is recognized. Is recognition of this point correct?

  • Hi Yone-san,

You are correct, the TPS65983B cannot boot without a SPI Flash.

The TPS65987D has some default configurations that it can boot into by changing the value on ADCIN1 and grounding SPI_MISO. By grounding SPI_MISO, the TPS65987D will not attempt to load a configuration from an external SPI Flash and will instead check the voltage at ADCIN1 to see which default configuration it needs to boot into. The default configurations and required pin strappings are discussed in section 8.4.1 of the TPS65987D Datasheet. "Configuration 1" is the closest to meeting your requirements.

Keep in mind, once you have booted into a default configuration, you still have the ability to adjust register settings over I2C.
