Ethernet 1000Base-Bx to 1000Base-T & SerDes Vs SGMII

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83867E, DP83867IS, DP83867CS

Hi,

In my board I have 2 number of SerDes Ports  (1000-Base-Bx). I have decided to convert the 1000Base-BX to 1000Base-T. For that I I have planned to use the Ethernet PHY transceivers

In my Board Intel I210-IS (PCI-MAC Controller) is used to get the 1000 Base-BX.

In the I210 datasheet, they have mentioned that, the IC will support for the SerDes/SGMII ports.

In the TI part it is mentioned that, it will support SerDes? May I use the same transceiver for the SGMII interface?

Is there any difference between SerDes & SGMII? Can any one clarify?

  • Hello Santhana,

SGMII standard has support for autonegotiation which the SerDes port may not have. If PCI-MAC controller datasheet says that it supports SGMII then it should be ok connect SGMII to 1000Base-T ethernet PHY to that port. Of course this will need to be verified in the datasheet of the PCI-MAC controller. The TI parts that support SGMII to 1000Base-T are DP83867E, DP83867IS, and DP83867CS.
