SN65HVD33: Is it ok to left 1 VCC pin floating

Part Number: SN65HVD33

Hi Team,

SN65HVD33 14-pin package has 2 VCC pins. Could we only connect one of them to power, but left the other one floating?

Thanks.

Zhou

  • Hi Zhou,

The SN65HVD33 datasheet states that pins 13 and 14 on the 14-pin SOIC package (the two VCC pins) are connected together internally.  Therefore, you should be able to operate the device with only one pin connected to VCC and the other pin floating.  However, I'm just curious what it is that constrains your application from connecting these pins externally, since the pins are located adjacent to one another.  Is there a serious area constraint in your application that prevents this connection?

Obviously the two terminal connection is preferred since it allows a parallel path for power dissipation from package to die, and the layout guidelines in the datasheet suggest two vias for VCC in order to minimize via inductance, but as I said this is not required explicitly since the internal connection is present and the device should function with one VCC pin floating.
