UCC21520: non-isolation application

Part Number: UCC21520

Hi Team,

My customer is surveying 1200V dual CH non-isolate gate driver. Since we don't have solution, customer think is it possible to use UCC21520 on non-isolation application. We would like to connect VCCI and VCCA, GND and VSSB together, build a external bootstrap circuit. Is this idea workable or does team have any comment or reference design can be shared with my customer?

Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Vincent,

Can you please confirm which pins they would like to connect? VCCA is not one of the pins on UCC21520. It looks like you want to connect VCCI to VDDB, and GND to VSSB, to create a non-isolated half-bridge circuit with a bootstrap supply for VDDA. UCC21520 can be used as a non-isolated half-bridge driver for 1200V channel-to-channel voltage. I don't know of any reference designs where the isolation of UCC21520 is intentionally defeated to form a non-isolated driver, but this configuration will not cause any problems for UCC21520.

One comment about the application: the bootstrap diode must be able to withstand 1200V, which is outside of the range of most cost-effective diodes. This could be solved using more expensive high voltage silicon diodes, multiple lower voltage bootstrap diodes in series, or a large SiC diode rated for >1200V.

    Regards,
  • Hi Derek,

Sorry for my typo for VCCA. I got your point and this method should be workable. Thanks very much for your comment.

    Best regards,
