AM26LV32E: Is additional TVS needed?

The AM26LV32EIRGYR provides some pretty good ESD specs. I’m using this for a quadrature encoder line receiver and there are a number of passive components ahead of the IC inputs. I’m wondering if I should put another device (TVS) close to the connector pins to better shunt the transients as they enter the board. I need to be able to accommodate at least 12Mbit/sec, so I can’t have a lot of extra capacitance on the lines. Is there a TVS part you might recommend for close to the connector pins? Or is this not needed?

It really depends on what kinds of transient overvoltage events you want to protect against. AM26LV32E has good IEC 61000-4-2 level, but if you need IEC 61000-4-5 kind of protection, external TVS diodes may be necessary. In general we recommend placing the TVS close to the IC pins to protect the IC. You could make the placement close to the connectors for system level protection. But please make sure the parasitic inductance from the connector to the IC is small and the return path ground is solid to reduce unnecessary peaking. I'm sorry I am not able to give a simple answer here.
