DP83867E: Auto-negotiation strapping

Part Number: DP83867E

Team,

My customer has the following question.

The DP83867 PHY datasheet has the following pin that straps auto-negotiation:

Can you help me understand the purpose of this pin strapping?  Does it apply to the MDI auto-negotiation or the MII auto-negotiation?

Also if it is set to 1 (disable auto-negotiation) and this applies to the MDI interface, what is the behavior of the PHY MDI interface?  If software doesn’t configure the PHY registers what is the behavior of the MDI port?

We are trying to setup the DP83867 into the following configuration (note that we only have 2 twisted pair on the PHY A and B pin pairs):

  • SGMII MAC interface mode

  • Auto-negotiation disabled for MDI link

  • 100 Mb/s full-duplex

  • MDI mode = MDI (auto-MDIX disabled)

Regards,

Aaron

  • Hi Aaron,

The strap applies to the MDI.
PHY must be strapped to mode 3 on that pin.

To acheive what you want you need to do the following:
    1. strap to mode 3 to enable auto-negotiation
    2. using register 0x0 set value to 0x2100

There is no Auto-MDIX shutoff for the DP83867E.
