TPS65987-90EVM: Not responding to Source when configured as UFP

Part Number: TPS65987-90EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65987D, TPS65987, TPS65990

Hi Team,

When testing the TPS65987-90 EVM, we found that TPS65987D is not responding to Source (TPS65986 EVM) as the attached log shows.

https://e2e.ti.com/cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/138/TPS65987_5F00_DRP_5F00_20180716_5F00_Sink.7z

We are using the default UFP template generated by the Applications GUI and all jumpers are at the default position.

Could you please help figure out the cause?

Thanks!

Roy Hsu

  • Roy,

Could you please describe the test setup that you are using? How are you trying to test the UFP functionality?

The Application GUI by default does not support the TPS65987_90EVM when if there is a TPS65990 (U7) on the board.

Also note that TPS65987/8 does not have USB2.0 and SBU muxes. We are currently in process of doing a new DP EVM that can be supported on TPS65987/8 EVMs.

    Best Regards,

    Ghouse

  • Hi Ghouse,

    1. Basically I'm using the TPS65986 EVM as source and connect the cable directly to the TPS65987-90 EVM.

The TPS65986 EVM is powered by an external 19V adapter while the TPS65987-90 EVM is expected to be powered by the TPS65986 EVM.

    2. Do you mean that we need to depopulate TPS65990 so that the Application GUI can support the TPS65987-90 EVM? If the GUI does not support this EVM, what should I use to generate the application code?

    3. Thanks for reminding! I guess the muxes shouldn't affect the PD negotiation.

    4. Do you have any TPS65987-90 EVM nearby so that you can do a quick check on this?

    Thanks!
    Roy Hsu
  • Hi Roy,

You are correct that muxes shouldn't make the PD negotiation. I was assuming that you will actually be looking for data transfers (USB3.0 etc.).

Coming to your failure point of initial PD negotiation, that won't work if TPS65990 is in the path and is not programmed. If you are trying to test TPS65987 only, the easiest path would be to remove TPS65990.

To remove TPS65990 from the board - follow these instructions -

    1. Remove IC U7 (top layer of the board) and leave as DNI per rev C BOM. Returns ICs (bagged) to TI
    2. Populate Resistors R93 & R96 with 0 ohms per rev C BOM
    3. Remove Resistors R76 and R77, per rev C BOM

    4. Remove Resistors R90, R91, per rev C BOM
    5. And Populate R4 and R5, per rev C BOM

    6. Remove R94 and R97, per rev C BOM
    7. Populate Resistors R2, R3, per rev C BOM
  • Hi Ghouse,

Thanks for getting back with the details!

    1. What do you mean by "rev C BOM? Where can I find it?

    2. Other than the hardware changes, I think the Application GUI available in the product folder doesn't work since the device name shown in the GUI is TPS65987DDH while the IC on the EVM is TPS65987DCG. I believe there should be another GUI working with this EVM that I need to ask for approval at mySecureSoftware?

    3. Why is this EVM made with TPS65990 as it is stopping the TPS65987D to function normally?

    Thanks!

    Roy Hsu

  • Hi Ghouse,

    1. Do you have a board which you have modified and tested? If yes, could you send me the bin or pjt file?

    2. We will also be using the DP Alt mode with the EVM. Are you saying that the DP EXPANSION EVM does not work with TPS65987-90 EVM?

    Thanks!
    Roy Hsu
  • Roy,

We are in process of updating the boards.  I did modify and test one board. Are you looking for the board itself or just my bin and pjt file file for customization tool? I am assuming the customization tool project file, so I am attaching that.

    TPS65987D-90EVM-PP1SNK-DFP-D.zip

#2.. The current version of DP EXPANSION board would not work with EVM. There will be a newer version of this DP EXPANSION board that would made available. It is possible that board may work in one orientation of Cable.

    Best Regards,

    Ghouse

  • Hi Ghouse,

    1. The PD negotiation is now functioning after I removed the TPS65990 and changed the resistors according to your suggestion. Thanks a lot!

    2. May I know the reason why the current version of DP EXPANSION board would not work with the TPS65987 EVM? Is that due to the lack of SBU mux? If that's the case, the board is still supposed to work under one orientation as you mentioned. However, we found that it's not functioning under either orientation. What would be the reason for this?

    3. When will the newer version be available?

    4. Can we modify the current DP EXPANSION EVM to make it work with the TPS65987 EVM?

    Thanks!

    Roy Hsu

  • Hi Ghouse,

Can I get an update on this?

    Thanks!

    Roy Hsu

  • Roy,

Sorry about late response on this. For some reason I was missing notification on this thread.

on 2. This is something we have not tested. In theory it should have worked. One of the thing you might want to check if there are resistors on the C6-9 are populated with a 0ohm. By default they should be, but I have found some boards that had this missing. There are quite few changes, we now have a mux with redrivers in the new version.

    3. Newer version development is done, I would think this should happen in by Q4 of 2018.

    4. You cannot modify the current one to work with this EVM. You will need a newer version.

    Best Regards,
    Ghouse
  • Hi Ghouse,

On 2, I guess you meant R6-9. On my board, R6 and R8 are populated which is consistent with the TPS65987-90EVM user's guide.

By the way, would you mind to test the alternate mode functionality of the current board as we really need to show that it works to my customer to DIN TPS65987D?

    3. Could you send the schematic of this newer version to me via email? When can I apply for this EVM?

    Thanks!

    Roy Hsu

  • See C6 C7 C8 C9. However, I would not suggest you to try to get this working with older version of the DP Expansion board.

  • Hi Ghouse,

Seems like you responded to a different thread: e2e.ti.com/.../2701698

I was actually asking for the schematic of the new DP EXPANSION EVM. Could you send that to me?

    Thanks!
    Roy Hsu
  • Hi Roy,

This schematic will be online soon, I am closing this thread now.

    Thank you,
    Eric
