TCAN1042V-Q1: Electrical connection for center pad for DRB package

Dear All,

I would like to clarify the electrical connection for the center pad of the TCAN1042-Q1 variants in the DRB (VSON-8) package.

The datasheet revision May 2017 does not list the connection for center pad on the pin functions on Page 4.

It says on the mechanical drawing that "The package thermal pad must be soldered to the printed circuit board for thermal and mechanical performance" but does not specify the electrical connection.

Could I please confirm that the center pad can be safely connected to GND?

Hi Bernd,

It looks like one of your example designs have the centre pad connected to GND.

To move our design forward, we will do the same, but it will be nice to have clarification as to what the pad is actually electrically connected to.

Hi Damien,

well done. I have seen that too and in 99% such pads are connected to GND but I prefer to have this remark in the datasheet.

Hi All,

In many similar devices, there is no internal electrical connection to the thermal pad, but it is recommended to be tied to GND to improve heat dissipation.

I'll run some tests on this device in particular to confirm. I'll also see if we can include a note on this in a datasheet revision.
