TPS65986: Application Customization Tool version 4.01

Guru 29720 points

Part Number: TPS65986

Hi Team,

My customer is designing TPS65986 with Application Customization Tool version 4.01.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Project -> New Project -> TPS65986 -> Standard (Recommended) -> DFP only

1)
Regarding "General Settings", there is two I2C address I2C1=0x38 and I2C2=0x20 as the following.
I couldn't catch why two address is existing.
Could you tell me the background?

2)
Regarding Control Configuration in "Common Settings".
My customer's application is DFP / Power Source only. (Power Swap and Data Swap aren't required.)
If so, is the recommended setting is default as the following?

The background of the question is there is pulldown menu of "No Preference, Reject All Swaps" each so I would like to ask default setting is recommended for DFP / Power Source only application.

  • Hi Yaita-san,

    1. You can ignore the second I2C address in the GUI tool. Only the first one will be relevant for the TPS65986.

    2. You are correct, if the customer just wants a simple DFP with no power/data role swaps, they should have the settings that you are highlighting in your image.

  • Hi Eric-san,

Thank you for your kind support!
I would also like to ask the following.

Is there any criteria if "Multifunction Preferred" should be checked or not?

    Best Regards,
    Yaita

  • Hi Yaita-san,

If you have multi-function preferred selected, you will prefer to enter a display port configuration that supports 2 lanes DP and 2 lanes USB3. If both a 4 lane DP pin assignment and 2lane DP + 2lane USB3 pin assignment is supported, it will enter the 2lane DP + 2lane USB3 configuration.

  • Hi Eric-san,

Thank you always for your kind support!

Is there any reference that describes the contents you commented above?
I should see it before asking questions on E2E if there is.

    Best Regards,
    Yaita

  • Hi Yaita-san,

I'm happy to help! We have an application note on Display Port Alternate Mode that has some details of multi-function preferred. You can read it here:

  • Hi Eric-san,

I would like to ask additional question.

My customer's application supports USB2.0 signal however they didn't connect D+/D- pin of Type-C connector to TPS65986. (Direct connection to USB Host.)
    Is it no ploblem?

If the answer is yes, is it required to check the following "USB RP Enable" and "USB2.0 Supported" in this case?

    Best Regards,
    Yaita

  • Hi Yaita-san,

If they did not connect the D+/D- to the TPS65986, they can disaable USB RP Enable. The USB2.0 supported bit should be left enabled so that the port partner knows the TPS65986 system can still support USB2 data.
