TPS65987D: TPS65987D power design for 100W, 5 PDO power source

Part Number: TPS65987D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM3489

Hi Sir,

My customer will start a new dock project by using TPS65987D. Please help to clear the power design question for their reference. Thanks.

 1. PDO voltage transmission in 1 power path:

We see 987EVM use LM3489 to generate PP_HV power for 5~20V PDO source. But in our experience of using 98x, if we use the same power path for 5V and HV PDO by using the same DCDC like 987EVM's design, the voltage transmission from 5V to HV is too fast and might have issue in certification (GRL...). Is there any FW modify in 987D to prevent the issue? Or customer need to add addition circuit to process the delay?

 2. When TI can provide I2C base PMIC to support multiple PDO for PPS or other application with many PDO?

Best regards,

Gary Teng

  • Hi Gary,

The TPS65987EVM uses the same power path for 5V through 20V sourcing. The 987D has two internal power paths. One of them is typically used for a Source and the other is typically used for a Sink. The LM3489 voltage transition slew rate can be adjusted but we have not seen any issues with it being too fast on the 987EVM.

We currently do not have any plans to support a PPS PMIC but we are still evaluating this for future need.

If this answers your question, PLEASE select This resolved my issue

    Thank you,

    Eric
