Can the DP83640 be utilized as an IEEE 1588 grandmaster device?

    Hi Carolus,

    Grandmaster is decided by the PTP.
    During system operation, PTP will decide which device in the network has the most accurate clock.
    I am sure this can be forced, but it is not a DP83640 decision. It is solely dependent on the clock reference and your PTP decision making.
    Long response, but yes, if the DP83640 has the most accurate clock in the network determined by you PTP then it can be a grandmaster.

    Thanks for the reply. One additional question based off of your answer: Do we have any reference designs focused on using the DP83640 as a PTP master connected to GPS? It doesn't appear that the DP83640T eval board is really sut up to do this. Any additional advice? 

    Also, is there a 1GigE variant of this part by any chance with an SGMII interface?
