TPS65982: Configuring TPS65982 for a specific PD contract

Hi Byron,

TPS65982 can negotiate a PD contract without any external microcontroller.
You will need to use TI's configuration utility to configure the chip as per your needs. Configuration utility can be downloaded from www.ti.com/.../tps6598x-config . Please follow the documentation which comes with the tool to know more about the tool ans its usage.

As per the USB-PD specification, a system must support a 5V PDO, and that's the reason the configuration tool is not allowing you to remove the 5V PDO. Please have the default 5V PDO and add the remaining PDOs as per your system requirement.

You need an external microcontroller only when you want to change the PD settings dynamically. If the all you want is a fixed set of PDOs then you don't need an external microcontroller.

An external flash is required for TPS65982 to store all the configuration and firmware.

Hi Byron,

I guess you meant 19V. You can do that by changing the 20V PDO to 19V PDO, but keep in mind 20V PDO is widely supported PDO by most of the PD sources and therefore you might face interoperability issues later on.

You can increase the tolerance in the configuration settings and that should take care of the IR drops in your system.

I think there is a misunderstanding.  We are trying to design a PD compatible power sink that requests only 20V power from a PD source which is capable of providing 5V, 12V, and 20V.  Can the TPS65982 be configured as a power sink and request only 20V power?
