Dear all,

My customer us internal PP-5V as 5V/2A source output, I wonder how to set the over current protection point and what the accuracy of this over current.

When enter short circuit, how long will it takes to enter input protection?

Hi John,

You can set the OCP point for each of the PDO in the "Transmit Source Capabilities" tab of the TPS65982 Application Customization Tool.

Please refer the user guide of the Application Customizaion Tool which is available with the tool. Please check the Douments menu in the tool to access the user guide.

Hi Rahul,

I set the source capability as below, but after customer test, the over current is 2.5A~3A, it is far from 2A I set.

Is there anything wrong?

Hi John,

There's nothing wrong in it, there're some tolerences comes from PD specification and some comes from hardware. The PD spec allows 10% pf tolerance which gives around 2.2A, we add additional 5% on top of it and then as mentioned there are measurenment tolerances too.

Including all of these tolerances I am ok if we see that VBUS trips around 2.5A, but 3A is a very high value.

I would like to see the data from the customer if the OCP is touching close to 3A.

Hi Rahul,

Can this current be set by EC? If yes, how to set it?
in the datasheet P14 of TPS65982DC, there is a parameter ILIMPP5V, which list a series of data, how to set different limit?

Hi John,

OCP current settings can only be set by the firmware, these settings are not allowed to be programmed over I2C.

Only way to set a different limit is to change the device configuration.

Hi Rahul,

Below is the short circuit waveform, the waveform shows after 5us it reach it max value, could you please advice is the 15A current trigger the protection or the Vbus_TypeC2 trigger the UVLO?

we want to reduce the current as soon as possible.

Hi John,

This in this situtation looks like the hardware is trigerring UV event which will cause the VBUS to trip. You can't do it faster than this, as hardware needs its own time to trigger the fault conditions.
