TLK10232: TLK 10232 PHY KX4-to-KR

Part Number: TLK10232

We need two ports converted from 10GBase-KX4 to 10GBase-KR. I am looking at the TLK10232 part which looks promising, though it calls out XAUI-to-KR only. I saw one mention in a support forum that indicated that this part would not function with 10GBase-KX4 instead of XAUI, though it was unclear why - due to specific configuration in one application instance or a wider limitation of the part itself.  Later, I saw some reference to making it work provided that the SERDES was configured to work for KX4.

So - what specifically would limit this part from functioning with a 10GBase-KX4 interface rather than XAUI?

  • Hi James,
To use TLK10232, you would need to configure TLK10232 into general SerDes mode. In general SerDes mode, TLK10232 can do 4 to 1 serialization of 8b10b data which should work with 10GBase-KX4.

  • OK, but isn't "10GBASE-KR Mode" required to communicate with the KR interface?  I thought that the KR side would require upstream and downstream 64B/66B encoding format, but if this is set to general SerDes mode then it wouldn't support KR on that side, right? Or maybe I am missing something?

  • Hi James,
You are correct. I overlooked that fact that you need KX4 to KR. General SerDes mode cannot be used for this purpose.

We do not promote using XAUI ports for 10GBase-KX4 as this is not a tested. Although XAUI and 10GBase-KX4 share the same data rate, there's some electrical differences between the two interface. We cannot guarantee the performance when using 10GBase-KX4.
