TPS2544: current issue check

Part Number: TPS2544
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2549

My customer is concerned about the max output current. Now they are using TPS2544 for 3A continuous USB charging. But in datasheet, there's two descriptions. One I find in recommend operation conditions, Iout is 2.5A, another is Adjustable Current-Limit up to 3.0 A (typ), So my questions are,

1. If our device could support continuous 3A current output.

2. If not, any part in your team could support up to 3A.

3. If yes, according to the forum in the DS, Ios_ty=50250/16=3141mA, selecting 16K in the circuit, if it is ok FOR 3A charging?

4. In customer's application, they set CTL,CTL2,CTL3, ILIM_SET to 1111,  If it is ok when power state is S3,S4,S5/

Thanks.

  • April,

The Current Limit is targeted to a typical value of 3A.  The MIn current before ILIM will be 2.77A.  If the device draws more than this current, some parts in the system will current limit and start to heat up and may go into thermal shutdown.

I suggest you consider the TPS2549 for your customer.  This part supports 3.2A continuous current.
