DS90UB953-Q1: max PoC (power over cable) current

Part Number: DS90UB953-Q1

Hi,

an engineer  needs to power a 2A load over a 15m cable.

1. Is that feasible?

2. are there recommendations that can be offered as far as filtering and countering potential ground lifting issues.

Thank you!

-Alberto

  • Hi Alberto,

Our POC network cannot handle 2A due to the current limit of the inductors.

What do you mean by ground lifting? If you have multiple ground layers with voltage potential between them, you can try to populate vias around the board to connect the ground layers.

  • Hi Jiashow,
ground lifting, is typically due to power being transferred between two systems that are separated by larger-than-typical impedance (e.g, long cable run), where the current flowing in the ground return causes a voltage difference between the source vs the receiver system.

The FPD is capacitively isolated for communication but I was inquiring about robustness if the differential is >1V, will the communication still be fine?

Also I you state the limit is less than 2A due to the current limit of the inductor; but if this is an external component is should be possible to increase this limit, correct?

    Regards,
    Alberto
  • Hi Alberto,

Our systems typically just have a hard ground, but if you are experiencing ground lifting issues, you could try the hybrid ground configuration by adding a capacitor on the receiver ground.

Regarding transferring 2A, you could find inductors of the same value as the ones from the recommended POC network with higher saturation current rating. Keep in mind that current rating scales with the physical size of the inductors.
