DP83630: crystal minimum amplitude requirement

Part Number: DP83630

Hi,

I'm using DP83630 PHY on my board and a 25Mhz crystal as the clock source. Does DP83630 has minimum amplitude requirement?

I'm measuring around 1.2Vpp sine wave, is that too low?

  • Hi Qi,

We normally do not discuss the amplitude of the crystal, but just ensure the crystal is oscillating and stable with a frequency that meets the ppm requirements in the datasheet.

Also, you should not measure directly on the XI or XO pins as this will cause unintended loading of the crystal by the probe. You should route the XI out of the CLK_OUT pin and measure the frequency there.

If the drive level of your crystal is OK, and you don't have an excessively large current limiting resistor(should be < 500ohms) in the XO path, your crystal circuit should be OK.

    Best Regards,
  • Hi Rob,

Thank you for your quick reply, very appreciated.
