TPS65983: PD function of Thunderbolt

Part Number: TPS65983
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982, TPS65987D

Dear Sir:

Can you provide TPS65983B SPICE model for simulation use?

What is the special difference between the functions of TPS65982, TPS65983 and TPS65983B?

In the PD design of thunderbolt, we only want to do the function of 5V3A output. Is there any IC recommendation that is simpler than TPS65983?

Thank you very much.

  • Hi Faith,

We don't have any spice model available for TPS65983B as it's a complex device and no spice model can really imitate the device and it's behaviour in the real world scenarios.

As far as TPS65982, TPS65983 & TPS65983B are concerned, they are older generation devices having similar feature set but with slight modifications to suit a particular requirements.

In case you want to use a PD controller for Thunderbold then I'll suggest you to have a look at TPS65987D. It's a latest device from our portfolio and supports the latest Thunderbolt specification.

Please click "This resolves my issue" if this answers your query.

    Thanks,

  • Dear Rahul:

Can you give a brief description of the most important differences between the three TPS65982, TPS65983 and TPS65983B? It seems that TPS65983 and TPS65983B are functionally and parameterically identical and TPS75982 and TPS65983B are pin-to-pin and circuit-compatible from the datasheet.

There's no PD controller that is just a 5V3A output chip, right? Because what I'm looking for is that cheapest and simplest solution.
    Thank you very much.
  • Hi Faith,

TPS65982 is the oldest device and is pin to pin comaptible to TPS65983 & TPS65983B. However all of these devices runs a slightly different version of firmwares to suit different end requirements. For example TPS65983B uses a Intel certified firmware for Alpine ridge devices and hence is recommended by Intel in their reference designs.

There's no PD controller which supports 5V only along with Thunderbolt.

    Thanks,
    Rahul
